On the front cover of the book is a painting David created from spiritual inspiration, which accurately depicts his childhood experience. At three years old, David and his father were traveling along a dusty road in southern Queensland when a snake appeared in front of them. It was so large that it stretched from one side of the road to the other, with each end still in the bushes. David’s father got out and chopped the snake in half. The picture illustrates that David’s father did his best to protect him during his childhood, but when he was not present, or had his back turned, David’s mother psychologically attacked him. This is shown in the picture as a half-snake, half-woman slithering from beneath the parked car. David’s mother’s jealousy of his attachment to his father, and later in his life to his wife after his father died, triggered fits of narcissistic rage. In 2019, David wrote to his mother in an attempt to reconnect with the family, but at 90 years old, his mother was still able to rage, making it very clear to David that unless he left his wife, he was not welcome into her family circle. David, therefore, never reconnected with his mother before she died at 95 years old in 2024.
